Carnations date back to Roman times, but most historians agree that things really didn’t take off until the early nineteenth century, thanks to glass greenhouses, stoves and heating. This fragrant 1870 French heirloom has 2” to 3”, double fringed flowers in a profusion of red, crimson, rose, violet, pink, white, yellow, orange and salmon, along with some bi-colors, all on strong elegant, blue-green foliage and stems. Butterflies enjoy their nectar. Used extensively in the cut flower trade, it exudes a robust spicy clove-like fragrance. The Chabaud variety introduced by a French firm in 1870 is still considered one of the best Carnations ever developed. Vita Sackville-West, the renown mid-20th century garden writer, proclaimed the Chabaud strain superior above all other annual Carnations.
