Rocky Ford Cantaloupe was born when pioneer G.W. Swink arrived at the Rocky Ford Crossing on the Arkansas River to build a trading post. Swink began experimenting with growing a muskmelon–a bit later coining the cantaloupe. The cantaloupe we know today, called the Netted Gem, was introduced in about 1887. Rocky Ford Cantaloupes are now being distributed to distant local markets. Within a short time, Rocky Ford Cantaloupes were being shipped as far away as New York and Philadelphia. This melon is the #1 of fancy restaurants! It has a sweet and spicy-tasting edge.
