Originally referred to as “Autumnal Marrow,” this squash with more than 200 years of documented history, and even thought to be much older, like ancient, this squash originated in the upstate New York area. Legends had it that Native Americans gifted the squash to colonists and seeds were later passed on to Salem, Massachusetts in 1831. The leading seedmen of the late 19th century referred to Boston Marrow as “the original Red Hubbard-shaped” and a brilliant red-orange color that can’t be found anywhere else. Fruits average 10–50 lbs., although 100+ is not uncommon.
