This is one of the most popular and flavorful of the winter squashes. The dark green skinned fruits are deeply ribbed and grow about 5″ (12.5 cm) long and 4″ (10 cm) across. The orange flesh is sweet, firm, and excellent baked, steamed, or microwaved. Stores well. Vigorous, compact bush plants grow 2′ (60 cm) tall. Culture: Direct seed at about frost free date into rich, fertile soil. Usually sown in groups (hills) of 6-8 seeds and thinned to the strongest 2-3 plants per group. Water regularly and fertilize when lateral runners begin to spread. Harvest: Shortly before full frost, cut from plant, leaving a good portion of stem attached. Skin should be dark green and firm. Nutrition: Excellent source of fiber and vitamin A, also supplies minerals and vitamins B & C.
