Also known as Blue Wild Indigo or Blue False Indigo, the flowers were once used by Native Americans and early European settlers as a dye before true indigo became available. It is native to much of central and eastern North America and is particularly common in the Midwest. Flower spikes appear in early summer. Emerging at the pinnacles are short, upright racemes and vase-like flowers that vary in color from light blue to deep violet.
