Painted Mountain corn was developed in Montana during the 1970s. Hundreds of different native heirloom varieties were collected and the selective hand-bred seed breeding process developed a good tasting variety that could grow in harsh conditions. The focus was on varieties planted by the Native American tribes and colonial homesteaders in the northern plains. Warmth, well-suited for cool nights and short growing seasons. Painted Mountain corn is a colorful and nutritious flour corn. It matures early, even in tough mountain environments. Painted Mountain is a multicolored corn measuring 10 to 15 inches long with tight rows. The dried kernels come in shades of purple, blue, yellow, white, and maroon. Avg. 6–7 multicolored ears for decorating, as grinding corn, or use in hominy grits. Also makes a high-nutrition flour.
