Popular shell bean used for soups or baked beans, an old favorite. Thick, flat, oval pods mature to 5″ (12.5 cm) in 18″ (45 cm) stems. Seeds turn from light green to white with red splashes as they mature. Culture: Any good well drained soil with a pH above 6 will grow beans. Beans do not tolerate cool wet soil. After last frost date sow approximately 50° F, sow seed 2″ (5 cm) apart, 1″ (2.5 cm) deep in rows 24″ (60 cm) apart. Thinning is not necessary. For continuous supply, plant every 3 weeks until July 15th. Harvesting: Let mature on the vine and let seed develop for dried beans. Nutrition: Good source of protein, dietary vitamins A and C.
