Also known as Granny’s Bonnet or European Crowfoot, it is a hardy perennial that prefers partial shade. Species of Columbine are native to North America, Europe, and Asia and some date to at least the mid-1500s. This beautiful woodland wildflower is known for their bell-shaped, spurred flowers, which range in color from light pastels to bright reds, yellows, oranges, purples, and bi-colors. The leaves have a lacy appearance. The tubes, or spurs, contain nectar that attracts long-tongued pollinators such as hummingbirds, butterflies, bees and hawk-moths especially adapted for reaching the sweet secretion. As a bonus rabbits and deer tend to ignore them.
