The leaves have a lacy appearance. The tubes, or spurs, contain nectar that attracts long-tongued pollinators such as hummingbirds, butterflies, bees and hawk-moths especially adapted for reaching the sweet secretion. As a bonus rabbits and deer tend to ignore them.
