This herb is also commonly referred to as Garden Lovage. A perennial with shiny green stems and leaves, this herb has a flavor similar to celery with a hint of anise. Try the leaves in a salad or soup, and the seeds as a substitute for fennel seed or celery seed. This plant produces yellow flowers appearing in umbels through the summer. Attracts beneficial insects. Botanically cousin of the carrot, the entire plant is long taproot, even this can be eaten as a vegetable. Lovage comes from the mountainous regions of southern Europe, primarily Italy, Greece, and France. Lovage is an ancient herb that was a common staple in kitchen gardens used to cure abdominal pain. Lovage is deer resistant, and an important companion plant for the vegetable garden.
