An Italian tomato variety has been passed down for generations in Italy, dating back to the early 19th century. Its heavily lobed and heavily ridged convoluted shape is very characteristic of early nineteenth-century tomato varieties. Grown by Thomas Jefferson from 1809 when he retired, and even after the variety’s origin died in 1826, Costoluto Genovese is the definition of an heirloom. Tomatoes are known for their intensely flavorful, deep red flesh.
