Also called Bellflower, they were one of the first imported flowers to grace colonial gardens. The name for Canterbury Bells comes from campanula meaning “little bells,” an appropriate name, since the flowers are bell-shaped. Believed to be brought here from the Pyrenees on the frontier between France and Spain. Having been grown in gardens since at least the beginning of the 19th century, the Victorians particularly seemed to appreciate their extravagant beauty and were willing to put up with their demanding ways to grow them successfully. Growing Canterbury Bells in your garden can add grace and elegance. They produce bell-shaped flower blooms up to 2 inches across in the summer of the second year after planting. Colors include pink, white, purple, lavender, blue, and violet. Their high nectar content will attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.
