Hollyhocks are old garden favorites. Native to China where it was imported into Europe during the 15th century. This variety was mentioned in 1629 and was planted in the gardens at Monticello by Thomas Jefferson. Flowers grow on rigid, towering spikes or spires which typically reach a height of 5′-8′ tall and usually do not require staking. Deep maroon, a color closest to black of any flower.
