Sweet Pea, Senator is an heirloom that was introduced by Eckford in 1891, with unusually large, maroon streaked white flowers, usually described as chocolate maroon flake. Like its old-timey cousins, ‘Senator’ is highly fragrant, and very late tolerant. An annual climbing plant, growing to a height 3 ft–6 ft, where suitable support is available. Culture: Sow seed outdoors in early spring in a sunny location into well drained fertile soil. Prior to sowing, soak seeds overnight to facilitate germination. Provide plenty of water. Mulch roots to keep them cool. They do best in cool weather and in hot climates where there is afternoon shade. Produces long stemmed cut flowers.
